Hi folks. I couldn’t find any other contact link- so I’ll ask you right here: Can I piggy-back on your express trip to fame and fortune by getting on your touring bike list? Popular custom “models”: Standard tourer-$3200, Classic tourer-$3900, Expedition-$5150. thank you! -Jon Littleford

Hi, Thanks for the list. I hope you keep updating it. It saves a lot of work.

Your thoughts on the kind of ride a Miyata 1000 Grand Touring (1984) will deliver for this aging dad who hopes to get back into touring after a 25+ year hiatus from steel. This body is not responding well to aluminum performance bike any longer

Ride with the fattest tires you can get away with and make sure the bike fits you. You should be fine.

Sorry if this is the wrong spot but I had a question, and found you guys to be the most inspiring in my bike tour aspirations.

I am thinking of taking a bike tour trip to Missouri from Texas this summer. I have done a few small ones and still have a few months to prepare. However, my main concern is directions. I checked out adventure cycling routes and it didn’t look like they had anything leaving the middle of centex that went up to Missouri. My question is what do you guys use for directions? Is it a GPS system? Are there any differences between techniques you used for directions while on the road when you first began bike touring to how you do it now? Thanks!

Hi Aaron! Well, we do a lot of our navigating on the fly. Generally we use Google Maps to try to scope routes ahead of time, which usually means about 1 or 2 days ahead of time unless we know we’re headed into a remote area where we won’t have wireless access. I’ve toured before where all I did was use state maps that I would just purchase when I crossed into a new state. Jar has posted the Adventure Cyling maps here in a zip file. http://www.wasitabatisaw.com/21-free-adventure-cycling-routes

Hey guys! I wanna be like you when I grow up… Me and my girlfriend have been on the road for about 2 months now from St. Petersburg,FL going to Seattle maybe San Fran. We are in Austin with broken spirits b/c of our spokes and not looking forward to the desert so Thanks for having a site that is reviving my need for travel and adventure. It’s 1 a.m. and I can’t stop reading. Any advise for getting through TX and NM would be great.

      Hi Gaby,

      Advice on biking across texas:

Don’t let all that “It’s huge, hot and full of backwards rednecks” stuff get to you. It’s actually pretty enjoyable ride.
I do recall some brutal headwinds, but we were going the other way so maybe they’ll be brutal tailwinds for you. Leaving Austin will probably get a little hairy. People are friendly, take the backroads whenever you can (You’ll have to ride on the interstate in more remote regions – which isn’t bad) and if you’re not in a huge hurry and don’t mind climbing to 9,000ft – heading to Cloudcroft, NM, then White Sands, then on to Las Cruces is more scenic and less sketchy than going through El Paso.

I have just run across your crazyguy posts and love it. Keep it going and enjoy it all. The good and rough roads. In looking back it will all be good. If you two head to Washington, DC drop me a line.
