Ride with the fattest tires you can get away with and make sure the bike fits you. You should be fine.

Your thoughts on the kind of ride a Miyata 1000 Grand Touring (1984) will deliver for this aging dad who hopes to get back into touring after a 25+ year hiatus from steel. This body is not responding well to aluminum performance bike any longer

Hi Aaron! Well, we do a lot of our navigating on the fly. Generally we use Google Maps to try to scope routes ahead of time, which usually means about 1 or 2 days ahead of time unless we know we're headed into a remote area where we won't have wireless access. I've toured before where all I did was use state maps that I would just purchase when I crossed into a new state. Jar has posted the Adventure Cyling maps here in a zip file. http://www.wasitabatisaw.com/21-free-adventure-cycling-routes

Sorry if this is the wrong spot but I had a question, and found you guys to be the most inspiring in my bike tour aspirations.

I am thinking of taking a bike tour trip to Missouri from Texas this summer. I have done a few small ones and still have a few months to prepare. However, my main concern is directions. I checked out adventure cycling routes and it didn't look like they had anything leaving the middle of centex that went up to Missouri. My question is what do you guys use for directions? Is it a GPS system? Are there any differences between techniques you used for directions while on the road when you first began bike touring to how you do it now? Thanks!
