So, Kansas is where my journey ended. And ended abruptly. As soon as I got off the Katy Trail, the temperatures were reaching 105°. Having ridden in temperatures like that in Arizona, I thought “Sure, no problem, just drink water, take breaks and you’ll be great.” Man was I wrong. The first day back on real roads and I was already baking. I got a late start and it was already unreasonably hot, and unreasonably windy, with unreasonably steep rolling hills. After 10 miles, I was already pretty much cooked. Every 20-40 minutes I would have to stop to cool [...]

Hi, I thought I’d finish documenting my trip while I’m still thinking of it. As anyone who once read my posts knows, I’m alive and finished touring many months ago. I didn’t get even close to touring to Arizona, but my wallet and body are far better for it. Moving from Illinois to Missourri meant crossing the Mississippi River, which frankly is intensely gigantic. You could barely see the ground on the other side of the river; it seemed almost a wide lake than a river. Traveling through Missouri meant being able to utilize the Katy Trail , [...]

After several months of hoboing around the country (about which I will continue to report on in the next few posts), I have made my migratory return to the Sonoran desert like a half-retarded snowbird. On the way home, I acquired a miserable flu that I’ve had for a month now. I think some people call it walking pneumonia. It wasn’t difficult to figure out how it happened. My friends made certain that before leaving Virginia I would find myself as immunocompromised as possible and ready to be bombarded and subsequently fucked by any virus or bacteria I’d come into [...]

The great escape from Tucson happened mid-July at the peak of the oppressive and stifling desert heat. You know, the kind of heat that makes you believe that maybe sometime soon we’ll all be living underground. The first stop was for a race in Utah called the Crusher in the Tushar. It was quite the slog as it featured 11,000 vertical feet of climbing within a 69 mile race at 10,000 ft and was half on the road and half on dirt. Some of the grades were insanely steep (like almost 20%). Many people were walking at various points and [...]

Traveling through Illinois was short and sweet, in total just three days. When I first started after having suffered through hills of southern Indiana, my original plan was to bum rush through the state in two days, which would’ve been about 180 miles. I convinced myself I’d do 80 miles from Sullivan-Green State Park to Effingham in one day, no matter what. I made it, but I had gotten such a late start and got dogged down by headwinds that I was burning myself out to make sure I got into town before nightfall. I got in at about 8:45, [...]
