Fell Down Went Boom

Tonight I went to a ghost hunter’s meetup (my coworker is a very active member). I have been to several of the meetings with him. Mostly, I go for the anthropological entertainment. If you want to see a group of weird people converge, I highly recommend seeking out the ghosthunters in your town.

It’s been a while since I’ve eaten shit on my road bike, and on the way back I did just that. I had one of my hands off the bars and was pointing to our next turn, and in the dark I didn’t see the giant boulder right in front of me. I ran right into it and the impact sent me flying over the handlebars. My friend shouted at me to get up and out of the road because there were cars coming behind us.

Ouch. Didn’t see that one coming. Then again falling off your bike usually does take you by surprise. The bad part is what I’m not showing you. I realized when I got home and went to take a piss that the handlebar must have gone into my thigh before I landed on the road and slid on my crotch.

The Cannondale town beater got even more of a beating than its daily rationing from the topple, but that might be a blessing because it will force me to give it some attention. It sorta pisses me off that I’ve been tuning up all kindsa bikes but letting my bike rot to hell. It seems that after work and on my days off, the last thing I want to do is bother with it. Maybe the bike was taking revenge on its neglectful owner.

already have one asshole…it’s just that 5 leds don’t do much to illuminate a dark road.

I have a Shimano DH-3N71 dynohub running a Busch & Muller IQ Cyo headlight. I do a lot of night riding and got this set up after a night crash due to not enough light that had me lying at the side of the road like a piece of meat for five minutes. I never knew how bright a light could be. The first time I tested it out I kept looking over my shoulder checking to see if there was a car behind me. I’m done with battery powered led’s for any serious riding. Hospital visits are too expensive. FWIW Just saying.

hey ryder…sounds like a good setup. i used to have a nightrider light but gave it to a friend because i knew i wouldn’t be recharging the battery all the time on tour. i’d like to get a generator hub again…

the generator hubs kinda slow you down too…there is a lot of friction.

That’s kind of a myth. When riding I simply can’t tell a difference. If you spin the wheel by hand when the light is ‘on’ versus ‘off’ your like damn that’s some resistance. I would say racing applications are the only circumstance where that resistance would even be the slightest concern. Bottom line I would say is that if you are riding after dark and you can’t see you need a light period. You gotta remember that lighting technology has just in the past few years crossed a line from lights that let you be seen versus lights that let you see. That IQ CYO that I mentioned early is the new brighter side of that line. Word.
