“How far have you driven that bike?”
A lot of random people that we meet while bike touring ask us some pretty hilarious questions. Here are a few that come to mind:
“How far have you driven those bikes?”- That is a pretty clear indication to me that you have never RIDDEN a bike before.
“How many tires have you gone through?”- Probably the most frequently asked question. I wonder sometimes if the people are confusing tires for tubes. People are shocked when I tell them that a pair of tires can last thousands of miles.
“Why couldn’t you just take a bus?” Haha not funny. Actually I’ve had a lot of people say that to me- especially when I was solo touring. I got tired of hearing it and would sometimes respond by rolling my eyes.
Then there are the more standard questions that we get asked by practically everyone we meet. I don’t mind answering these questions, of course. But sometimes you do feel like a broken record:
“How long has it taken you to get here?”- It makes sense to be curious about how far you can travel on a bike in a certain amount of time. Most people seem surprised that it doesn’t take longer.
“What do you eat?”- Another sensible question to which the answer is EVERYTHING…except meat of course.
“How do you afford this lifestyle?”- Good question. When I get that one completely figured out I’ll probably be ready to stop touring.
…Speaking of DRIVING BIKES!!!
Velocars or Velomobiles seem really cool and sometimes Jared and I imagine what it would be like to tour in one. My friend Leilani in Tucson told me that they took a pedal car out on the Tuesday Night Ride last night.

Apparently these boomed in France during WWII oil shortages and also became popular in Sweden. They declined in popularity after the war but made a resurgence in the 1970s. Velocars influenced the development of recumbents. I can’t say that was much of a progression. The velocars are very appealing to me because they seem sleek and sexy. Recumbent bikes are probably faster, but they sure are awkward looking. Nowadays it seems that velomobiles are making a bit of a comeback. Or maybe they just never went away and now I’m paying attention. Nevertheless, I hope to see more of them in the future!

MY eyes—-My eyes !!!!!
sorry dean. we re going to fix that.
no we are not!
Jared, white text on bright color is absolutely horrendous.
aint it?
Oh and these colors are awful. By the way.
i know, erik. i m not the one messing with the stylesheet.
Actually come to think of it would prefer to drive my bike and sell my car.
that’s it.
I think we actually have it backwards, driving cars and riding bikes. When I am in car I feel pretty disconnected to the contraption, even as the driver. But the bike is different. I feel like I am actually doing something, making it go, and driving it.
I think I’m going to start riding my car and driving my bike.
Erik
i see what you mean, erik. maybe those people are on to something.
