Shitty Cumpleaños

I am lamenting the loss of my little Olympus digital camera that is responsible for most of the photos on this here blog. Our neighbor the waterfall king took us to another picturesque mountain waterfall and convinced me to dive off another big cliff.

On my last jump of the day, I put the camera in my velcro pocket like an idiot and upon resurfacing, the camera was on it’s way to it’s final resting place at the bottom of a pool of unknown depth underneath a waterfall. If only I had the official floaty strap. Another thing that I lost at this same spot is tiny piece of one of my bottom teeth. I think I’ve had enough of jumping off of high things.

If I could see things from a better perspective, I would realize that I’ve had the camera for 3 years and have gotten more use of of it than most would in 10. However, instead I am just beating myself over the head for my stupidity.

The worst part was that it happened the day before my birthday, which was not the most celebratory day of my life as I live with a party pooper. The pooper however, is purchasing me a Kindle that will be en route when my best friend comes to visit, so I’m sure that the wounds will heal when my fancy new gadget arrives.

Lars birthday feast. Export Cheetos = $5

That ain't dirt on the floor...

Actually, the best thing that happened on my birthday did involve poop. Our toilet was completely backed up for 8 days. I don’t want to give you the details, but there was poop all over the bathroom floor.

Central American plumbing is a delicate affair, and the TP is supposed to go in the trash here (yes, even the first wipe). Long story short – Jared unleashed the beast and wrecked the plumbing. We waited for over a week for anyone to come out to fix the situation. On my birthday, Mario and Luigi came out and pulled up half the yard to fix the septic system. Conveniently, we missed the bus to Manuel Antonio, and the electricity was out for the entire day. So we had nothing to do but sit around and smell the wonderful aromas coming from the bathroom as the plumbers walked back and forth from the toilets to the pipes in the yard. But by the end of the day, we no longer had to pee in the shower or walk a 1/4 mile to the pool to make brown.

Sorry for the lack of photos. Perhaps a new camera would have been a more appropriate bday gift. I am actually perusing Amazon right now in search of the perfect waterproof point and shoot. I’ve narrowed it down to either the Canon DS-10 or the Panasonic Lumix DMC- TS2. Anyone have any recommendations?

the D10 seems like a good choice for underwater proofing. it looks bulbous though and maybe not as portable as a slimmer unit.

    maybe a fujifilm FinePix XP11

hey stevo. yes the canon apparently takes better photos that the other two, but the video quality is pretty poor and it also doesn’t fit in your pocket. decisions decisions.
