Rock Ring

We have a lot of old tools at the bike shop because the shop has been around since the 1930s, and many of the bikes that we work on are old. Whereas a lot of mechanics work mainly with cartridge bottom brackets that you’d replace rather than overhaul, we do plenty of bottom bracket overhauling. Here’s a great Hozan lock ring tool:

Apparentry other people are rearry rove the rock ring wrench too.

I found these postings on a bike forum for mechanics:
“I absolutely love the Lock Ring tool. I have two of them, obviously different forgings. One of them has the immortal line “Rock Ring.”

“Mine has the “Rock Ring” embossing too. I wouldn’t give it up for anything. I don’t use it much anymore since most of my bb’s are cartridge style but the entertainment
value is priceless.;)”

It seems that this mistake has made this wrench a somewhat coveted tool. I guess someone in the Hozan labeling department made a little booboo a while back. Understandable.

The Japanese “r” is different from the English “r”. The sound is sort of between the English “r” and “l”. To make “r” sound, start to say “l”, but make your tongue stop short of the roof of your mouth, almost in the English “d” position. It is more like the Spanish “r”.

The Japanese have trouble to pronounce and tell the difference between the English “r” and “l’ because these sounds don’t exist in Japanese.

I noticed that language discrepancy from one of my favorite Japanese bands and this song. Open your eyes you can fry.

From the standpoint of friction, do you think that you can adjust a lock ring so that it turns over more easily than a cartridge bottom bracket? Some cartridge brackets seem really stiff. How about setting up the older style bottom bracket with a full complement of bearings instead of using the bearing retainer ring?

Are you talking cartridge square taper or cartridge outboard bearing?

In any case, the answer is “yes”, but only with the rock ring wrench.

i think that cartridge bearings are wonderful for the majority of people who won’t bother with having their bottom bracket serviced for 20 years. but cup and cone is sexier and way more fun!

Geez, I had to replace one this spring that was only three or four years old. Maybe it was a cheap one.
