Recommendations:

Want a good new touring bike and don’t feel like researching?

IMO: The best value (last time I checked) for a touring bike is the Raleigh Sojourn. It is unusually well equipped for it’s price (really fancy nice shifters, rack, saddle, tubing, fenders, handlebars, cranks, tires). All it really needs before a long heavy tour is a competent spoke loosening/re-tensioning or better yet a whole new stronger wheelset….and a front rack. If you shop around you can find the Sojourn new for under $1000 – at that price you know someone, somewhere is being exploited on your behalf.

I converted my 2004 Gary Fischer MTB to a touring bike. It handles the loads and distance fine, but has extremely low gears (24/34/42 + 13-30/7 cog)

After (5-8K miles?) the rear wheel is spent, the rear axle skewer is bent, crank bearings go a tickety-tickety and I think the 24t chainwheel needs a dentist or something… All said – I love the frame, but looking at costs – I’m seriously looking at a new “real” touring bike. Your experience and work on this list is highly valued, many thanks!

I appreciate the info you compiled. I am considering a touring bike, and this was one of the first stops for information. Kudos!

Great list, thank you much. I want to do Randonneuring in 2011, and these bikes fit that. Does anyone make a travel bike yet using the Shimano 11-speed internal gear hub? Thank you.

I have this GT touring bike:
    http://www.gtbicycles.com/Peace-Tour

The components aren’t great, but they’re decent–fine for what I need. It also seems a little heavy, though I’ve never weighed it. I don’t know how the weight compares to other touring bikes. It’s Reynolds 520, so I imagine it’s pretty similar to other 520 bikes. I’m really happy with it. I’ve only about 500 miles on it so far and no problems. And at $800 it’s kind of a steel.

Thanks for this list. My Jamis Aurora was just stolen and I’ll probably be in the market soon.

I sowie. Do you have it’s serial number?

I’ve noticed that Jar’s bike has fenders, while Lar’s bike does not. Obviously Lar has survived the lack of fenders, but is it miserable without them?

What are both of your thoughts on the subject of fenders?

    Thanks!

I’m a fan of the fenders. Lauren gets wet.

Hey I’m looking to do a coast to coast and found the new 2010 Fuji tourist for $700. and I heard the spokes are better. If this is true is it worth it? What year was yours?

      Asher,
Mine is a 2007, but with the exception outboard bearing crankset, the touring hasn’t really changed much since.
Its unlikely the spokes are any better. No matter what bike you get these days you’ll be getting machine built wheels and it will always be a good idea to replace or properly re-tension them before doing any kind of heavy riding.
